Greg Abbott promised to protect Texans from these ridiculous surprise bills, but energy companies have said they have no other choice. That means thousands of Texans are at risk of financial ruin without the help of nonprofits.

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, the second-largest legal aid organization in the nation, is providing free legal services to low-income Texans.
