The two committees leading the campaign to recall Governor Gavin Newsom
have announced that they have more than enough signatures needed to
trigger an election.(1)

Several Republicans have already declared their candidacies, kicking off
the same kind of media circus that helped Arnold Schwarzenegger wrest the
governorship away from Governor Gray Davis in 2003.(2)

We worked too long and too hard to build the coalition of progressive
statewide officials and legislators we have now to see it go up in smoke
with an ultra-right-wing-funded recall. Courage California is partnering
with progressive organizations across the state to launch our “Say NO to
the recall!” campaign. Will you donate?

takeover of the governorship.

The recall effort is an unholy alliance of QAnon believers, anti-vaxxers,
and white supremacists who are trying to capitalize on the difficulties
the coronavirus pandemic has caused.(3)

The recall process is supposed to be reserved for the most egregious
misconduct, but these extremists are using frustration at the pandemic to
try to overrule the 60% majority who voted for Governor Newsom.(4)

Even now, the governor has a 52% approval rating.(5) But make no mistake:
if progressives don’t get out and fight, there’s a real chance Gov. Newsom
could lose to a Republican.

While it is unlikely that a Democrat will challenge Gov. Newsom in the
recall election, several Republicans have already declared their
candidacies.(6) In 2003, Schwarzenegger won with less than half the vote,
and it could easily happen again.

Courage California is working alongside partners, including the National
Union for Healthcare Workers, to reach out to California progressives and
encourage them to vote to reject the recall. We’re going to speak out
against the recall campaign for the $81 million in taxpayer funding that
is estimated to be wasted on the election and emphasize just how harmful a
recall would be to our progressive future.(7)

Together, we can defeat this growing effort to take over the governorship.
