Just moments ago, President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan into law. The comprehensive plan includes $1,400 relief checks, $300 to unemployment insurance benefits, an expansion of the child tax credit, billions of dollars for schools, support for small businesses, funding for vaccine research and distribution, and more.
We're glad to see that after months and months of organizing, the federal government is finally sending much-needed relief to folks on the ground. And while the American Rescue Plan is critical to our recovery, it doesn't address the need for ongoing relief, which is absolutely critical for people's survival and human dignity.
That's why Jamaal is proud to support Rep. Rashida Tlaib's Automatic Boost to Communities (ABC) Act. The ABC Act would deliver recurring, direct $2,000 payments to everyone in the United States — regardless of immigration status — for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic. While relief initiatives like stimulus checks and unemployment insurance do help some folks, it leaves out many others who don't qualify for the programs, such as gig workers, students, and undocumented folks. That's what's great about the ABC Act; it gets everybody — from children to undocumented folks — direct, consistent relief.
What's more, an overwhelming 60% of voters support recurring payments, along with a growing coalition of Congress. But we need to show huge public support for this legislation in order for it to be a success.
