Later tonight, President Biden will give an address to the nation to outline our progress in the yearlong efforts against COVID-19 and recognizing the passage of the American Rescue Plan this week.

This historic bill will provide direct relief to millions of working families by:

- Sending $1,400 checks, including to adult dependents excluded from previous checks
- Extending the $300 increase in unemployment insurance benefits
- Halving childhood poverty by substantially boosting child tax credits
- Expanding the Affordable Care Act subsidies to slash premium costs
- Increasing funding for states, localities, tribes, schools, and public health providers

We applaud the Biden-Harris administration for this impactful stimulus that helps young Americans, but you and I both know our work isn’t finished. Though President Biden has extended the freeze on federal student loan payments, he has yet to support a plan to eliminate at least $50,000 in student debt via an executive order. 

Together, the freeze on loan payments and the American Rescue Plan will provide much-needed relief to many families, but it’s still not a long-term solution for the 45 million Americans burdened by the student loan debt crisis.

Yesterday, marked the 50th day of Joe Biden’s presidency -- and we’ve already made significant progress on a number of matters. Yet, we’re disappointed to see a lack of urgency on the student debt crisis from this administration. But we’re only redoubling our efforts.

There is one encouraging sign on this front. Democratic senators added a provision in the American Rescue Plan that sets the stage for future student debt cancelation by making student loan forgiveness tax free.

With this provision signed into law, now is the perfect time for President Biden to endorse the proposal by Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren to eliminate $50,000 in student debt via an executive order. Though we won’t stop working until all federal student loan debt is eliminated, this would be a good start.
