Deb Butler Receives National Recognition for Her Leadership



 

Of course we knew this all along.

 

Our District 18 Representative Deb Butler is one of seven who have been nominated by the LGBTQ Victory Institute for its 2019 Tammy Baldwin Breakthrough Award. Each year, the award is given to an up-and-coming elected official whose promising political career will move equality forward. Last week, Victory Institute supporters submitted hundreds of names to be considered for the nomination, which Victory Institute staff reviewed and winnowed to seven official nominees, including Deb.

 

Deb has recently received national recognition for her defense of democratic values with her spirited protest to a Republican sneak attack in the House of Representatives, responding to attempts to silence her with her battle cry "I will not yield."  If you feel moved to support Deb for the Tammy Baldwin award, you can support her by voting  at this this site between now and October 7.

 

 

North Carolina 9th Worst Uninsured Rate in U.S.; Republicans Still Resist Medicaid Expansion

(From NCDEMS) - This month, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that North Carolina’s uninsured rate is the ninth highest in the nation. More than 1 million North Carolinians – 10.7 percent - didn’t have health insurance for all of 2018. Still, Republicans refuse to expand Medicaid which would help 634,000 North Carolinians access affordable health insurance.

 

Instead of submitting a compromise budget proposal and having a good faith conversation about expanding Medicaid, Republicans chose to lie to their colleagues and hold an ambush veto override vote in “a shameless theft of democracy.”  This is par for the course from Republicans who have called Medicaid expansion a “pet project,” and who told North Carolinians without health insurance to “get a job.”

 

North Carolina GOP Chair to Plead Guilty to Lying to the FBI

(From AP) A former North Carolina GOP chairman will admit in court that he lied to federal agents conducting a bribery investigation of a major political donor, according to court documents filed Friday. The former chair, Robin Hayes, resigned after he was indicted in a scheme to bribe Mike Causey, the North Carolina Insurance Commissioner. Causey, a Republican, contacted the FBI and assisted them with monitored phone conversations that captured Hayes and others planning alleged bribes.

Robin Hayes is scheduled to enter a guilty plea on Wednesday. A factual basis document prepared as part of the plea agreement and signed by Hayes' attorney said that Hayes knew he was making false statements to FBI agents conducting the bribery probe in 2018.

 

NCDEMS commented, "Bribery. Election fraud. Witness tampering. Lying to the FBI. It’s been a rough year for N.C. Republicans."

 

Party to Appoint Resolution Development Committee

At its August meeting, the New Hanover County Democratic Party adopted a motion calling for resolution development to be handled by a new committee.The resolution development committee will be made up of three members who must each be serving currently as an officer of the county party, a precinct chair, or a precinct vice chair. Board of Elections Special Meeting to Choose Voting Machines -- October 1

 

When: Tuesday, October 1, 4:30 p.m

Where: Board of Elections conference room, 230 Government Center Drive, Wilmington

 

The New Hanover County Board of Elections will be meeting to take action on a preliminary recommendation of a new voting system  to the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners. Other election-related business will be conducted as needed. 

Following the public meeting, the New Hanover County Board of Elections will meet in closed session pursuant to N.C.G.S. § 143-318.11(6)  regarding personnel matters.  If you have any questions, please contact the New Hanover County Board of Elections at 910-798-7330.

 

"Protect Our Coast" Public Forum and Panel Discussion -- October 2

Margaret Haynes for City Council Reception -- October 6

Ready to Lead Workshop Changes Location from Hickory to Charlotte -- October 12

The Ready to Lead workshop for this date was originally to be held in Hickory, but organizers have switched the site to Charlotte. Ready to Lead offers a full day workshop designed to support potential leaders who are taking their first steps towards running for office. As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to articulate why they want to step into public leadership, develop their personal narrative, and understand the basics fundraising, organizing, and how to start planning a campaign. Anyone interested should complete the online application, and applicants who are accepted will receive an email confirmation with a link to register. Don't delay! Space is limited, and spots are not guaranteed until the registration fee of $20 registration is paid. The fee covers the cost of lunch and materials for the workshop. Judge Brook is seeking election to the seat he now holds on North Carolina Court of Appeals. From 2012 through his appointment to the Court of Appeals by Governor Roy Cooper in April of 2019, Chris was the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina. In 2016, the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys awarded him with the Gwyneth B. Davis Public Service Award.
