The American people sent Democrats to Washington to tackle the big issues and move our country forward, not to give Mitch McConnell a veto over any bill he wants to stop. But for years, McConnell has been abusing the Senate filibuster — an arcane rule that needs to go.

A lot of people think of the filibuster from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. That’s what I envisioned when I got to the U.S. Senate. The truth is, that’s just not how it works.

What the Senate filibuster really does is it gives a minority of Senators the power to just say “no” and stop us from passing laws that a majority of Americans want. No debate. No negotiation. Not even a vote. It was supposed to give the minority party a voice on issues they care about, but Republicans like McConnell have abused it to grind the Senate to a halt.

The filibuster is undemocratic and under Mitch McConnell, it has become the enemy of progress. It’s been a highly effective tool in thwarting the will of the people, especially when it comes to racial justice. From civil rights to voting rights to raising the minimum wage, Republicans have used the filibuster to block reforms on the issues that matter most to the American people.

Well, I was sent to Washington to get things done — we all were. And the only way we’ll be able to make the big structural change our country needs is by ending this archaic process once and for all.

That’s why I now believe we must eliminate the Senate filibuster in order to stop Republicans from abusing it to block progress, and I’m asking you to join me.

Will you sign my petition demanding an end to the Senate filibuster? It’s undemocratic, and it must be abolished immediately. We cannot allow McConnell and the Republican minority to continue abusing it to stop our urgent priorities.
