Today the House passed the American Rescue Plan and sent it to President Biden’s desk.

The bill includes $1,400 direct cash payments, extended unemployment benefits, rent and food assistance, money for vaccine distribution and education, an increase to the child tax credit, and much more.

Experts say the $1.9 trillion bill will cut child poverty in HALF, and the poorest 20% of Americans will see a 20% boost in income. This bill is a major victory delivered by Democrats that will help America beat COVID-19, support the most vulnerable families, get our kids back in the classroom safely, and drastically cut poverty.

I particularly want to highlight how important it is that we are raising the child tax credit. This is a massive long-fought victory for progressives.

This bill will nearly double the child tax credit and make it fully refundable — expanding it to finally include the poorest Americans.

More than 10 million children live in poverty, and this measure alone is expected to cut that number in half. That is astounding progress. Let’s be clear: This would not have happened if progressives had not pushed and fought for this idea for years.

Of course, we didn’t get everything we wanted in this bill. Democrats will keep working to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, get more relief into the hands of struggling families, and support frontline farmworkers who are keeping our families fed in this crisis. But that is why we must continue to organize and build progressive power from City Hall all the way to Congress.
