Dear John,
While the majority of American workers are currently paying Social Security tax on every dollar they earn, the wealthy pay Social Security tax on just a fraction of their income. (Last month millionaires stopped paying into Social Security when they reached the $142,800 income threshold — the rest of us will continue to pay all year long!)
But shouldn’t the wealthy have to pay Social Security tax on
every dollar they earn too?
Right now, the National Committee is putting maximum constituent pressure on lawmakers to pass legislation that adjusts the wage cap on Social Security which prevents billions of additional dollars from flowing into the Social Security Trust Fund. Lifting the cap would extend the solvency of Social Security. It also would help cover the cost of boosting Social Security benefits, which most Americans support.
As you know, so-called “fiscal hawks” in Congress argue that Social Security must be cut in order to save it, by raising the retirement age, means testing or by other measures. We disagree. It’s unfair to ask seniors, workers with disabilities and their families to bear the brunt of strengthening Social Security’s finances.
But it IS fair to ask the wealthiest among us to pay more than they’re currently paying into Social Security, then all Americans can count on the benefits they’ve earned over a lifetime of work!
Until we right this wrong, Social Security will continue to be starved by this outrageous policy! So please GO ON THE RECORD with your member of Congress right now by signing our Petition today!
Sincerely,
|
