Dear John!

We are so excited to honor NBC’s Transplant for breaking new ground by featuring a Muslim lead character in its primetime medical drama!

Transplant centers around Syrian Muslim Dr. Bashir Hamed and the challenges he faces as a physician, a refugee, a brother, and an ally to those still struggling to survive the war in his home country. His presence impacts the perspective of the entire ER team he works with, as they come to see what he carries internally every day. At a time when healthcare workers are overburdened, exhausted, and having to perform in heroic ways, Transplant provides viewers with an inspiring team of doctors who are also invariably human.

The team of producers and writers made it a priority to authentically portray characters, their background, and the storyline. It was important to depict the struggles and triumphs each character faced to show a more human perspective of refugees, immigrants, and Muslims audience might have not seen before.

** “There are immigrants and refugees in every show that we see, and they’re never given the spotlight. The difference here is you actually see a different dimension to a character you may have seen in other shows, but you never get to go home with them. We explore things on this show that are foreign to a lot of people because they’ve not been accurately represented in mainstream media.”
