Friend,
Last night, the Senate parliamentarian announced that--in her
opinion--President Biden's $15 an hour minimum wage increase must be
removed from the COVID-19 relief bill before it can be passed.
According to the corporate media, this announcement was the death knell
for the $15 an hour minimum wage. But they're wrong.
There's a key detail that the corporate media aren't telling you: the
Senate parliamentarian's opinion is just that, an opinion. Under the
U.S. Constitution, Vice President Kamala Harris, not the
parliamentarian, decides whether $15 an hour belongs in the bill or not.
As Morris Pearl, chair of advocacy group Patriotic Millionaires, told
Vice President Harris in a statement: "This is not a difficult decision.
Use your power. Keep $15 in."
Vice President Harris would be facing overwhelming public pressure right
now if the corporate media reported this story accurately--and perhaps
it's not a coincidence that the corporations that own our biggest news
outlets oppose the minimum wage. That's why it falls to us to alert the
public and ensure that voters know that it's Vice President Harris, not
some un-elected senate staffer, who has the power to make this decision.
The American people desperately need a raise, and Common Dreams is

the halls of power. Will you rush a donation to help support our
