Indivisibles,
Next week, the House is voting on H.R. 1 -- the For the People Act. This
far-reaching bill expands voting rights, gets money out of politics, and
fights corruption. And it’s one of the keys that will unlock a host of
progressive policy opportunities in this rare Democratic trifecta.
If we want to win on massively popular priorities like universal health
care, immigration, economic justice, or climate, we MUST pass this bill
and other democracy reforms. If we don’t, Republicans will be able to
block and roll back every step forward we make.
Next week’s vote is a big moment. We’re creating everything from call
scripts and websites to digital ads, event supplies, and peer-to-peer
contact programs to empower next week’s activism and our whole democracy
reform campaign, the For the People Project. Overall, we’re planning to
spend over $625,000 just to get the tangible products for our democracy
work ready -- and that doesn’t even include the ongoing spending that
makes it possible, like staff time or digital infrastructure.
So we need your help. [ [link removed] ]Click here to donate $10 to fund the For the
People Project, pass H.R. 1 and other structural democracy reforms, and
support all of Indivisible Project’s work.
Need some more info? Here are a few of the big changes H.R. 1 would make
to build a more inclusive democracy:
* Empower voters and reverse decades of Republican voter suppression. By
restoring protections from the gutted Voting Rights Act, expanding
voter eligibility, simplifying registration, and preventing partisan
gerrymandering, H.R. 1 will make our elections more representative and
participatory.
* Stem the tide of big money in our elections and strengthen campaign
finance law. H.R. 1 takes important steps to reverse the disastrous
effects of Citizens United, providing public financing to amplify
small-dollar donations, requiring disclosure of all political
spending, and more.
* Tackle ethics and corruption in government. H.R. 1 expands government
ethics rules to cover everyone in government (including the president)
-- demanding disclosure of financial conflicts of interest, blocking
the “revolving door” between government and lobbying firms, and
prohibiting bribery.
These reforms will go a long way toward the real structural change we need
to make our priorities possible. Together with H.R. 4 (the John Lewis
Voting Rights Act), H.R. 51 (the D.C. statehood bill), and our efforts to
abolish the filibuster in the Senate, this legislation will unrig our
democracy and put the unearned power Republicans have been hoarding for
decades back in the hands of the people. And that will allow us to push
forward all our other priorities.
To build power for the people, we need to use the power the people already
have -- that means putting the strength of the Indivisible movement to
work making it all happen. Our movement is what it is because of the
actions and support of grassroots activists. And our work is only possible
because thousands of people like you come together to provide the funding
to put it in motion. [ [link removed] ]That’s why we’re asking: can you donate $10 to
pass H.R. 1, execute our democracy reform plans, and support all our
progressive priorities this year?

The Democratic trifecta in the federal government gives us a rare
opportunity, not just to win policy fights but to fundamentally remake our
democracy for the better. We don’t have much time to do it, but we know
this movement can handle it. We’re glad you’re in it with us.
In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
