John,
This weekend marks 27 years since the Brady Bill officially went into effect as the first federal law to require background checks for gun sales, creating the foundation of today’s gun laws.
The Brady Bill, like our bold organization, is named for Jim Brady: Jim was shot in the head when a man – who could have been prevented from buying his gun under today’s Brady Background Check system – attempted to assassinate President Reagan. Jim and his wife, Sarah, went on to spend the rest of their lives fighting against gun violence, including the battle to pass the Brady Bill. In 27 years, the Brady Background Check System has prevented over 3.5 million prohibited gun purchases and saved countless lives.

Despite the irrefutable success of the Brady Bill, we have failed to update our gun laws for the changing world around us and there are dangerous loopholes that must be addressed. In fact, 1 in 5 guns is sold without a background check – no questions asked. This is especially concerning when the number of guns being sold in America continues to skyrocket: Last year, the Brady Background Check system blocked more than double the number of illegal gun purchases as the year previous. All Americans are at risk if we do not act immediately to close these deadly loopholes, John.

It is more critical than ever that we take immediate action to ensure that every gun is purchased with a Brady Background Check , John, but we can’t do it without your support. That’s why — in honor of 27 years of the Brady Bill — we’ve set a bold goal to collect 127,000 signatures to urge Congress to strengthen and expand background checks. Will you add your name today, John, and demand action in honor of the 27 years of the Brady Bill? [[link removed]?]
John, two years ago the House passed expanded background check legislation, but Mitch McConnell let it die on his desk — even though over 90% of Americans support this lifesaving legislation. We have finally elected gun violence champions to the White House and both chambers of Congress and we must urge them to take critical action and deliver on their promises.

We know that Brady Background Checks save lives, John – but in nearly three decades, Congress has failed to expand Brady Background Checks to all gun sales and close deadly loopholes. To honor the 27th anniversary of the Brady Bill we are taking action. Will you add your name to our petition urging Congress to take immediate action to expand and enhance Brady Background Checks, John? [[link removed]?]

Thank you for honoring this important date with action, John.
