John,

I have come to you before, talking about how in this moment, I can feel the weight of history on me. This afternoon, I am keenly aware of our American story.

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed the Equality Act, a sweeping set of reforms that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation and gender identity.

In the face of bigoted hate, we have stood tall and furthered a piece of legislation that will create real change for the people of this nation.

But as we celebrate, we must remember this isnā€™t the finish line. Right now, members of the House refer to me and the rest of the LGBTQ+ community as 'disgusting,' 'immoral,' and 'evil.' They and their allies want to make sure voices like mine arenā€™t heard -- will you chip in $3 to ensure they donā€™t get their way?Ā Ā»

On January 3rd of this year, I walked into Congress as the first gay Afro-Latino in history.

And here I stand, just weeks later, upholding the abiding truth of this American experiment:

That we are all created equal, and that none of us should be evicted, fired, or denied accommodations and services simply because of who we are or whom we love.

A younger Ritchie would be enamoured by the thought of being a part of this historic day. And while I still have that feeling, I know that this isnā€™t the be-all and end-all of this movement.

So I am coming to you, John, a long-time member of this progresive movement -- will you give $3 to keep up the momentum for this fight? We need to raise $10,000 to hit our February goal, and your gift will go to making sure my voice is heard in CongressĀ Ā»

We would not be here if not for people like you, John -- so, for that I thank you.
