Dear Hello,

February is Black History Month, an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Black Americans in all walks of life. In our realm of politics, we’ve been reflecting on the fact that throughout our country’s history, Black Americans have often been the ones leading an imperfect nation towards the vision of a more perfect union laid out by our founding fathers. From the enslaved people who built our nation’s Capitol to the civil rights movements of the sixties and today, members of the Black community have been at the forefront of watershed moments in our democratic progress.

As Black History Month comes to an end, we’re also bearing in mind the disparities in power and representation that pervade nearly every level of government — and eager to do something about it.

We just launched Serve, Lead, Unite, our candidate recruiting initiative as we gear up for the 2022 cycle. If you’re a Black servant leader, please get in touch today to connect with us about serving our country in elected office. >> [link removed]

If not, please nominate someone in your network who would serve with courage, integrity, and empathy. >> [link removed]

Our nation’s communities of veterans and ever growing ranks of national service alumni are flush with talented, inspirational leaders from diverse backgrounds. Achieving our goal of a “new politics” means doing everything we can to empower these rising stars. One of them is David Crowley, a Wisconsonite who joined AmeriCorps at age 18. Several years later, New Politics supported David in his campaign to become a State Representative, an election he won. In 2020, David ran for higher office and won again, this time making history by becoming the first Black County Executive in Milwaukee’s history.

If, like David was, you’re a veteran or national service alumnus looking to continue your service to our country, please let us know how we can help. >> [link removed]

PS — This month, we featured two inspiring Black women on our podcast. Listen to Dr. Max Klau’s interviews with Debbie Harrington ([link removed]) and Claudette Williams ([link removed]) on our feed.
