February Roundup

Welcome to my February newsletter!

This month the snowdrops have blossomed, the daffodils have begun to bloom and the first lambs have started to be born. It does feel as though Spring is around the corner. Covid rates are broadly moving in the right direction and vaccine rollout continues at pace. Schools reopen in less than a fortnight. With the publication of the Government’s Covid roadmap earlier this week, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.

I hope you enjoy reading what I have been up to this month.

Bicester Active Travel Scheme Consultation

Oxfordshire County Council recently secured funding from the Government and Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership for a new Active Travel Scheme in Bicester. The scheme proposes a network of measures to improve walking and cycle routes from the south and west of Bicester into the town centre. I think these measures will be broadly positive, provided there is sufficient consideration of the needs and safety of all road users. You can read my full response to the consultation here ([link removed]) .

Supporting Local Businesses

In recent weeks I have spoken to some of our local businesses, from hair and beauty salons to gyms, to hear about how they are getting on and discuss the support that is currently available from the Government.

If you have any specific concerns regarding the support available to your business at this time then please do get in touch with me via email.

Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership Roundtable

On 5 February, I joined a roundtable meeting hosted by the Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership alongside fellow MPs from across the county. It was really interesting to hear more about the performance of the local economy over recent months, as well as the needs of businesses at a regional level. We had productive discussions on a number of topics including the funding and support available to local companies, the impact of the pandemic on employment and the economic outlook for the months ahead, with the Budget next week.

Meeting with Banbury Chamber of Commerce

I was also pleased to catch up with the Banbury Chamber of Commerce on 12 February following our last meeting back in September. I know how tough it has been for shops to endure both local and national restrictions, when so many rely on the regular footfall of customers. I look forward to attending the Chamber’s online event on 19 March for local businesses to discuss a slightly different topic: changes to trading arrangements after Brexit.

Finmere Landfill Facility

The start of the year has seen an increase in complaints about the odour at the Finmere Landfill Facility site. Residents are understandably extremely frustrated at the ongoing situation and the time it has taken for the remedial work to be completed in Cell 10. I joined a Parish Council meeting at the end of January to discuss residents’ concerns. This was followed by a meeting with the Environment Agency, Oxfordshire County Council, the Parish Liaison representatives and the landfill site operator at the beginning of February.

Telephone Surgery

A couple of weeks ago I held a telephone constituency surgery. While it isn’t quite the same as my regular face-to-face meetings at supermarkets in Bicester or Banbury, the virtual surgeries seem to work well. I had back-to-back calls with constituents to talk about a range of issues, from personal problems to my thoughts on Government policy.

For the time being, all surgery appointments will remain over the telephone or online. My next surgery will be on 26 March between 10:30 and 11:30. Please get in touch with my office by emailing victoria.prentis.mp@parliament. (mailto:[email protected]) uk (mailto:[email protected]) if you would like to make an appointment. Alongside my surgeries I have also had some more catch up calls with head teachers at local primary schools which continue to prove extremely useful.

Spring 2021 Roadmap

The Prime Minister has now set out his roadmap that will guide us of the current lockdown. While he cannot make any guarantees, he is hopeful that the plan will help move us irreversibly towards reclaiming our way of life while doing all we can to protect people against Covid. With vaccine rollout continuing to go well in our area, I think it is a cautious and comprehensive plan that shows there is light at the end of the tunnel. You can read more here ([link removed]) .

Summer Assessments

Yesterday, the Government published its response to the recent consultation on how this year’s exam results will be awarded. This year, students will receive their GCSE and A-Level results from their teachers who will be able to assess pupils through a combination of mock exams, coursework and essays, and the optional use of questions provided by exam boards. The full response can be read here ([link removed]) .

Debates and Committees

This month I had to go down to Westminster to respond to an Adjournment Debate on Zoos and Aquariums and for the Committee stage of the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill (also known as #FinnsLawPart2). I also participated in a virtual hearing of the Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Select Committee to answer questions about the impact of the pandemic on food supply and the hospitality industry.
