People For Member, This Sunday, my dear friend and People For the American Way founder Norman Lear will receive the Carol Burnett Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globes. I’d love for you to join me in celebrating Norman and his life of remarkable achievements, on and off the screen, including what Norman has many times recognized as one of his greatest achievements: cofounding People For the American Way. Will you please take a moment now to sign our card to Norman congratulating him on this honor? >> Norman Lear has created some of the most important shows in television history. His groundbreaking work in television and entertainment made him a cultural pioneer, bringing the real issues faced by real Americans and their families into the public view and shifting the nation’s social and political discourse. The progressive movement – and the country as a whole – has benefited mightily from his patriotic activism in defense of democracy, equality, and freedom of speech and expression. 40 years ago this year, Norman Lear joined with the late Congresswoman Barbara Jordan and other leaders to provide the country a vital counter to the growth and increasing influence of right-wing extremism in American politics and society. Norman and our other cofounders knew the severity of the threat posed by the politics of hate and bigotry, and they knew that it was a problem that was not going away. The country needed a new voice to push back against the Far Right’s messages and agenda, and to provide an aggressive, vocal defense of our constitutional rights and values. So they founded People For the American Way to be that voice. Thank you for being part of this shared legacy and for everything you do. Sincerely, Alec Baldwin, Board Member
