Off to the races in 2021!

TRANS HISTORY IN THE MAKING

Yesterday, Dr. Rachel Levine made history as the first out trans person to be nominated for a Senate-confirmed post. She was nominated by President Biden to be the next Assistant Secretary of Health!

While the vast majority of questions were respectful and focused on Dr. Levine’s many qualifications, U.S. Senator Rand Paul caused fireworks when he used horrific and hateful anti-trans talking points to launch a bigoted tirade against Dr. Levine.

Luckily, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, the first out U.S. Senator, and U.S. Senator Patty Murray were on-hand to chastise Paul for his lack of decorum and call out his ideological bias.

Paul’s talking points match the language used by certain members of Congress and the anti-trans bills currently sweeping the state legislatures - yet another reason to elect out trans candidates at all levels of government who can defeat these toxic ideas.

And we’ll need their voices: NBC Out recently published an expose on the right-wing organizations working to defeat The Equality Act and promoting anti-trans policies.

THE FIGHT FOR EQUALITY

Yesterday, the U.S. House passed The Equality Act, which enshrines protections for LGBTQ Americans into federal law.

Passage of the bill, which was introduced again by out Representative David Cicilline and voted for by all nine out members of Congress, is being celebrated by LGBTQ activists and elected officials alike as a much-needed step forward.

The Equality Act will now head to the U.S. Senate – and U.S. Senators will need to decide which side of history they want to stand on.
