Cancel culture is real, but ISI students are fighting back
Wall Street Journal: these ISI students “refuse to be canceled”

Dear John,
I’m hearing the same question more and more from ISI friends and supporters:
“What is ISI doing to fight back against cancel culture on campus?”
You probably know that colleges are cracking down on anyone who dares question progressive orthodoxy.
But I’m happy to tell you that ISI is pushing back. Thanks to your support, we are empowering brave students to stand up for free speech and open intellectual inquiry ([link removed]) .
Here’s just the latest example . . .
This week, the Wall Street Journal reported on the impact a new ISI-sponsored student journal is making at the University of Chicago ([link removed]) . As the Journal put it, the ISI students who founded the Chicago Thinker “refuse to be canceled.”
That’s exactly right. The students declare in their mission statement, “We demand not to be coddled.”
And they understand the stakes: “Some things are too sacred to surrender to the mob, and the free exchange of ideas is one of them.”
Yesterday morning, Fox & Friends had the ISI paper’s founders on to discuss their campaign against cancel culture. “Self-censorship on campus has really become a sickness,” cofounder Evita Duffy said on Fox. “At one point this summer, we said, ‘We are done. We’re sick of being cancelled.’ ”

None of this would have been possible without the support of ISI’s Collegiate Network journalism program, says editor in chief Audrey Unverferth:
To write that ISI’s Collegiate Network (CN) has given me unparalleled opportunities would be an understatement. The CN provided the support, mentorship, and startup funding necessary to challenge campus orthodoxy and defend conservative and libertarian principles in an environment often hostile to such expression. A year ago, I was tired of being told what to write, say, and question; since then, the CN has emboldened me to speak up and encourage my peers to do the same.
John, that’s the kind of impact your support is having at this very moment.
And the Chicago Thinker is only one example. ISI sponsors nearly 60 student publications across the country. Since the fall we have added 17 new papers at schools like NYU, the University of Texas, William & Mary, Pepperdine, Washington University in St. Louis, and Baylor.
And many other thoughtful students want to start publications like these. They are looking at campus cancel culture and saying, Enough!
ISI is here to support those students.
That’s why we are looking to add at least 10 more student papers in 2021. We need to raise at least $100,000 to do it.
Will you help? ([link removed])
Right here, on the campus—this is where the battle of ideas is being fought.
This is where the next generation of leaders will learn either to defend their principles . . .
. . . or to bow to the woke mob.
Which choice do you want them to make?
Thank you for your support for ISI. I hope you’ll consider making a gift now ([link removed]) to help us start more student publications like the Chicago Thinker.
Yes, I want to support more students » ([link removed])
With gratitude,
John A. Burtka, IV
President and CEO
P.S. The Wall Street Journal and Fox News could do stories like this about dozens of other ISI student groups. Please consider making a gift now ([link removed]) to help us support more student publications like the Chicago Thinker.
