For years after India passed its Bonded Labor System Abolition (BLSA) Act in 1976, some government officials pointed to the law’s passing as a mission accomplished, denying the prevalence of labor trafficking. In a sign of profound change and the government’s increasing commitment to protect its most vulnerable people, multiple states have established an official day of commemoration.

“IJM applauds the new court ruling for correctly applying the law,” said Sonia Hernández, IJM’s Associate Director in the DR. “This sends a message to traffickers that this crime will not be tolerated or go unpunished.”
IJM Thailand heard from Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation (DSI) about a potential human trafficking and forced labor case they had received from the Myanmar Embassy. On the morning of January 27, IJM Legal and Aftercare staff were on the scene to assist in a rescue operation at the confectionary factory.
