It was just a little more than a year ago that I served as lead manager of the first impeachment trial of Donald J. Trump. At that trial, we warned Senators that if they failed to convict Donald Trump after he betrayed our national security and undermined our democracy, he would do so again.

Sadly, through his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, culminating in the incitement of a violent and deadly attack on the Capitol, Donald Trump proved us right.

As I watched along with the rest of the nation as the House Managers presented the case to the Senate, I was moved by the power of their advocacy and their passion for protecting our Constitution and our democracy. And among those who so expertly conducted the trial was my friend and colleague, Madeleine Dean.

I knew Mad would do a great job as an impeachment manager, just as she’s already established herself as a leader in the Democratic Caucus. And that’s why we need to make sure that she has the support she needs for her campaign and to be ready for anything the extreme right-wing might try to throw at her.
