John, I ran for my first office — a seat on the Allentown School Board — after learning that a 16-year-old I met while working at the Boys and Girls Club had dropped out of school. No one had stepped in to ask why or to get her the support she needed to finish high school. I began researching how schools work — and sometimes don't work — and my path to candidacy was forged. I knew that people like me — people who looked like me and with my experience and resources — had an uphill battle to winning elected offices. But I also knew a voice like mine was needed. I ran my campaign on a shoestring budget, knocking on doors, and meeting people where they were. I won that election and every election since in similar ways. By representing my community on the issues that impact their ability to thrive. By speaking out against injustices even when it's hard. And by always, always putting people over politics. That’s why I need you, John.
