Friend -- My heart is so full right now.
In 2012, I became the first openly gay person of color EVER to be elected to the United States Congress.
And yesterday, I served as Speaker Pro Tempore of our new Congress as we prepared to vote on the Equality Act -- now with nine openly LGBTQ Members.
Now today, the U.S. House of Representatives has voted to pass the Equality Act, a sweeping set of reforms that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation and gender identity.
Team, this incredible victory is thanks to this grassroots movement for equality and justice that you’ve helped me build. This is what we can accomplish when we don't give up on our progressive values in the face of bigoted hatred.
But while we celebrate, we can't forget that Republicans are furious that we passed this landmark legislation. They're going to launch a full-force attack on progressive like me who helped lead on this issue. Will you chip in $3 NOW to ensure this momentum doesn’t die down? »

The Equality Act will amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to explicitly prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. That means:
-
LGBTQ people can’t be fired because of who they love or their gender identity
-
Public accomodations like retail stores can’t refuse business to LGBTQ people
-
Broadly expanding protections for LGBTQ people to areas like housing, education, health care, and more!
Let's be clear, we’ve all seen it, in every progressive movement -- two steps forward, one step back. The passage of this bill in the House is not the end of the road for LGBTQ equality.
Will you chip in just $3 to join me in the struggle for equality?

Thank you, team, I’m so proud of how far we’ve come -- it wouldn’t be possible without you.
