Team — The start of this year has been nothing short of eventful. Since day one of the Biden-Harris administration, I have been working closely with my colleagues to set an agenda for the future and rebuild in the aftermath of the Trump presidency.
There are already milestones to be proud of — like the US rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement! — but there are also critical issues we must prioritize to support families across the US.
While there is a lot going on, I want you to be updated on the most important steps I’m taking in Congress. Read on for an update on what’s happening in Congress and in San Diego. And as always, thank you for your support.
— Scott
February is Black History Month
Black History Month is a reminder that we must continue to celebrate and honor the work of our predecessors — like my late colleagues John Lewis and Elijah Cummings — by recommitting to racial justice and equity.
There are long-overdue measures our nation must take to dismantle systemic racism and ensure equality for everyone — addressing racial disparities in healthcare, policing, access to housing, and much more.

Supporting the Biden-Harris administration and our Democratic majority
Scott is working with House Democrats and the Biden-Harris administration to help our nation recover from the division of the past four years and take action on COVID-19, climate change, affordable healthcare, and more.
Scott recognizes that it’s crucial for us to hold seats and to expand our majority. That’s why he’s a leader, continuing to build a Democratic coalition, taking action on climate change, and reaching across the aisle to pass common-sense legislation for American families.
Here are a few highlights from Capitol Hill:
Upon being personally asked by Speaker Pelosi, Scott has returned to the House Committee on the Budget in the 117th Congress. He’s eager to take a leading role in shaping the federal budget, pass President Biden’s COVID relief plan, and invest in the issues that matter most as a member of this crucial committee.
Scott reintroduced the bipartisan Health STATISTICS Act to improve data sharing efforts for our COVID-19 response. This legislation will answer calls from public health experts to improve data collection and reporting on COVID-19.
Scott is working with his colleagues in the House to provide additional COVID-19 relief and adequate vaccine distribution. California is one of the hardest hit states in the nation and he’s demanding COVID-19 relief for San Diego families right now.

Supporting Students’ Safety — the STANDUP Act:
In September, the House passed Scott’s bipartisan STANDUP Act, to implement evidence-based suicide awareness and prevention training programs in grades 6-12. Now, Scott is reintroducing the bill to protect our students, and he needs your support to make sure teachers, administrators, and students have the resources they need to boost youth mental health awareness and stop violence before it happens. Strengthening Our Democracy — the For the People Act:
Over the years, and especially this past election cycle, we’ve seen a growing effort by the GOP to restrict many Americans' fundamental right to vote. That’s why House Democrats re-introduced the For the People Act, to fortify our democratic processes and ensure all Americans have equal access to participate in our electoral process.
Protecting Our Environment
Scott is dedicated to protecting our environment — and he’s leading the way by urging leaders to act now to tackle climate change.
Read Scott’s op-ed new with V. Ram Ramanthan and Durwood Zaelke in The San Diego Union-Tribune on the immediate need for action to bend the warming curve.
The science is clear — we need to take steps now if we hope to avoid the increasingly devastating effects of climate change.

COVID-19 in San Diego County
