Hi John,

Last June we celebrated a landmark Supreme Court decision in Bostock v. Clayton County, which affirmed that LGBTQ+ employees cannot be fired, denied a promotion, or face other negative employment action because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Following that, on President Biden’s first day in office, he signed the historic Executive Order on Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation, which applies Bostock’s reasoning to all federal agencies and programs that implement other laws prohibiting sex discrimination, such as education, housing, healthcare, credit, jury service.

But questions remain. The Court may still grant exceptions to the rule, and a future presidential administration could reverse President Biden’s executive order. This is why it is so important that Congress passes the Equality Act.

The Equality Act will establish federal nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people in housing, employment, education, credit, public spaces, federally funded programs, and jury service.

LGBTQ+ students and educators deserve discrimination protections that are permanent.

The Equality Act will answer any remaining questions about the Bostock decision, and ensure that LGBTQ+ students and educators will have protections regardless of whether the any future administration, challenges the Court's decision or the executive order.

All students deserve safe and affirming K-12 learning communities where they can thrive and reach their full potential. All educators deserve safe and affirming work environments where they are afforded dignity and respect. And every person deserves to be protected from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Will you join us in telling the Senate that it is time to pass the Equality Act and ensure robust LGBTQ+ nondiscrimination protections once and for all?
