ACTION NEEDED! SB 90 – Vote By Mail Ballots

SB 90 is currently sitting in the Government Oversight and Accountability committee. This bill limits the duration of requests for vote-by-mail ballots to all elections held within a calendar year of a request. Current state law allows VBM for all elections through the end of the calendar year of the second ensuing regularly scheduled general election. This bill is a form of voter suppression and will make voting more difficult for many who can’t access the polls easily.

Please send an email to the Senate Government Oversight and Accountability Committee and ask them to not consider this bill. Their emails are below (just copy and paste):

ACTION NEEDED! Medicaid Expansion

No one should have to decide between financial ruin and life-saving care for themselves or their families, especially during a pandemic. But year after year in the Florida Legislature, the Republican majority blocks efforts to expand Medicaid.

Expanding Medicaid isn’t some pie-in-the-sky reform effort, it's a popular component of the Affordable Care Act and one 39 other states have approved to provide health care for low-income working adults.

Expanding Medicaid in Florida will benefit more than one million Floridians, including thousands of veterans, parents, and near-retirees who have jobs without health coverage. That’s why we’re building grassroots support to expand Medicaid in our state.

Even before the pandemic, almost 900,000 uninsured adults in Florida would have benefited from Medicaid Expansion. But after massive COVID-related job losses, and with the pandemic still upending lives across our state, the number of Floridians who urgently need to access care has only increased.

Expanding Medicaid is critical, and not just to the health outcomes for more than a million Floridians. The state budget faces a massive revenue shortfall, including an estimated $2.75 billion deficit next year alone.

Nearly the entire cost to expand Medicaid would be covered by the $14.3 billion in federal dollars that would return to Florida, saving the state nearly $200 million annually. Expanding Medicaid will bring our federal tax dollars home to create thousands of jobs and increase access to health care here – instead of sending our tax dollars to fund health care in other states.

Click below to write Senator Debbie Mayfield and Representative Erin Grall to let them know you support Medicaid expansion. It takes less than 1 minute!

Stormwater Utility in Vero Beach

------------------------------------------------------------

** Please support a stormwater utility in the City of Vero Beach! Reduction of stormwater pollution will depend on new projects to filter and treat runoff before it reaches the Lagoon. No doubt these projects will be costly but, by having a dedicated source of funds, the City will be eligible for cost-share matching grants from State agencies to leverage stormwater dollars. The Stormwater Utility could generate approximately $1 million/year to be spent on water quality improvement projects. For the average residential property, the fee is estimated to be about $5/month – the cost of a fast food meal! The Indian River Neighborhood Association and the Clean Water Coalition of Indian River County are working to add Vero Beach to the long list of cities and counties in Florida with a Stormwater Utility, but they need our help! DEMOCRATS OF INDIAN RIVER

In Memory of Former Indian River County Democratic Party Chair, Horace Lindsay

Horace Lindsay was an extraordinary man with an extraordinary retirement mission: to bring dignity and respect to the Democrats who resided in the ruby red county of Indian River. Serving as the Chair of the Democratic Executive Committee, Donna and he mentored his fellow Democrats, especially in the early days of Obama's first term. We are forever grateful for that leadership and tutelage that we still can feel today.

Horace challenged us to be engaged. He encouraged monthly socializing via our Democratic potluck dinners. He created networking so we could meet our fellow Democrats in Indian River County. And not only did we meet one another, he created opportunities to further the Democratic cause. He found ways for each of us to find our niche in our Democratic community. Some of us volunteered at Headquarters by answering the phone and doing office work; some of us became precinct captains and members of the Democratic Executive Committee; and some of us trained to be poll workers and poll watchers for Supervisor of Elections, Leslie Swan. We became active in the county.

Horace always pitched in to help with many of our community’s events. Each year he helped to decorate cars at the annual MLK Day parade; attended banquets at the Gifford Community Center; attended the annual Florida Democratic Party State Conference where he proudly displayed our Indian River County Democratic Executive Committee delegation banner; helped in our several moves to new headquarters offices; put together auction baskets and auction golf packages for the annual Blue Gala; and met fellow political junkies on Saturday mornings for Koffee with Ken and Parris.

The Democrats of Indian River were so proud of our Chair and the example he set for us to follow – He Made Us Proud Democrats! Thank you, Horace.

May God bless you and give you eternal peace.

Precinct Captain

As we begin to prepare for 2022 elections, we need our local Democrats to help us build a strong DEC (Democratic Executive Committee). The way to do is through Precinct Captains.

DEC members are the Precinct Captains of the Democrats of Indian River County. Precinct Captains are elected officials who work to educate, energize, and organize the registered Democrats within their geographic area (precinct). A volunteer position of Precinct Captain requires dedication. One must be willing to commit to attending monthly DEC meetings, vote on issues relevant to our local Democratic Party, lead neighborhood volunteers in canvassing, phone banking and texting, and represent the Democratic Party at community meetings and activities. A Precinct Captain must be both personally motivated, have the ability to motivate others and possess an ability to work well with others. Training and support are provided on an on-going basis. Time commitment per month is approximately 5-10 hours. At this time, all our meetings are virtual and we are not actively engaging in person with Democrats in each precinct.

If you are interested in being a precinct captain, please email Stacey at
[email protected] (mailto:[email protected])

Communications Committee—Social Media Director

Communicating our values and our activities to the public is critical if the Democratic Party is to be successful. Our Democratic Executive Committee is looking for a Social Media Director as part of our Communications Committee who has strong skills across a variety of platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) and has been successful in placing and targeting ads on Facebook. If you feel you possess the skills we need and have the time to dedicate to this position, please email Stacey at
[email protected] (mailto:[email protected])
