Trump Gutted a Law That Saved Millions of Birds Every Year – Here’s Our Chance to Restore It

Submit an official public comment asking the Biden administration to restore protections for birds under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Dear NRDC Activist,

In a blatant handout to the oil and gas industry, former President Trump gutted a landmark law that has saved millions of birds every year. Now, we have a chance to undo Trump's damage — but we must act by March 1.

Join our fight to save the Migratory Bird Treaty Act: Submit an official public comment calling on the Biden administration to restore critical bird protections.

The Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) is one of America's oldest conservation laws. Before Trump dramatically weakened it, it safeguarded more than one thousand bird species from threats like toxic waste and oil spills.

Snowy egrets, wood ducks, sandhill cranes, and many other species are around today because the MBTA pulled them back from the brink of extinction.

There has never been a more critical time to have a robust MBTA. We are living amid a severe global biodiversity crisis and climate change threatens to wipe out two-thirds of all bird species. Nearly 3 billion North American birds have been lost just since the 1970s.

The Trump administration exacerbated these threats by illegally gutting the MBTA so that corporations could no longer be held accountable for the millions of preventable bird deaths they cause each year. The long-term consequences of this would be devastating for our birds and our ecosystems.

The Biden administration is reconsidering the Trump administration's illegal decision to dismantle the MBTA. Please help us overwhelm them with public comments in support of restoring this landmark law.

NRDC is in court right now challenging Trump's illegal move and fighting to restore these vital bird protections. But in the meantime, we urgently need to generate a groundswell of public support.

You know us: We've been working to protect migratory birds for decades and we won't stop fighting to restore these critical protections until we win. President Biden has already taken key steps to protect the nation's wildlife and cherished wildlands, including committing to addressing Trump's assault on the Endangered Species Act and issuing an executive order to halt drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and new drilling leases on federal wild lands. Restoring the MBTA is an important next step in our fight to protect imperiled wildlife and their habitats before it's too late.

Help show the Biden administration that people across the country are counting on them to save birds from devastating declines — please send your message before the March 1 comment deadline.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Katie Umekubo
