House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney of Wisconsin are clashing over whether Trump should speak at this weekend's Conservative Political Action Conference.

McCarthy - who voted against impeaching the president over his role in inciting the January 6 assault on the Capitol - told reporters:

"Yes, he should."

Cheney, who voted for impeachment, said she doesn't want Trump leading the Republican party:

"That's up to CPAC. I’ve been clear on my views about President Trump. I don't believe that he should be playing a role in the future of the party or the country."

Miguel Cardona to be Secretary of Education

The Senate is expected to vote in the near future on the nomination of Miguel Cardona to be Secretary of Education, with a procedural vote likely to occur later this week.

• Cardona is an educator who has served as the Connecticut commissioner of education since August 2019 when he was appointed to the role by Gov. Ned Lamont (D).
• He started his career as a fourth-grade teacher in Meriden, Connecticut, his hometown, and was promoted to principal at age 27 ― which made him the youngest principal in Connecticut in the decade prior. 
• Cardona, who is Puerto Rican, grew up speaking Spanish as his first language and struggled to learn English in his early school years, which has led him to focus much of his academic research on closing gaps between English-language learners. If confirmed, he would be the second Hispanic to serve as education secretary

FDA Says J&J's Single-Shot Vaccine is Safe

Clinical trials indicate that the J&J vaccine is equally effective against the U.S., South Africa, and Brazil COVID-19 strains; however, it provides less overall protection against the South Africa and Brazil strains.

An external expert committee will meet on Friday, February 26, to make a recommendation as to whether the FDA should authorize J&J's vaccine for use in the U.S.
