Republicans across the country are rushing to pass sweeping abortion bans at the state level as we wait for a Supreme Court decision that could further restrict or even overturn Roe v. Wade.

But courageous Democratic women leaders in New Mexico, like Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, are stepping up to defend reproductive rights. New Mexico's majority-women legislature just passed a bill to overturn a ban on most abortion procedures -- and Grisham made sure to swiftly sign it.

“With uncertainty at the federal level, New Mexico needs to be clear about women's rights, women's health care, women's reproductive choices, abortion and abortion care,” said Grisham in a call with reporters, according to the Washington Post.

Grisham knows we can't just sit idly by while the GOP aggressively attacks reproductive rights. But not every state has leaders like her, and GOP-controlled legislatures like South Carolina's are passing “heartbeat” bills with the hopes that Roe v. Wade is struck down and that their misogynistic laws won't be challenged.

Together, we can defend reproductive rights from the GOP's relentless attacks and ensure that our government is led by women leaders who share our values.
