Friend, As COVID-19 social distancing and stay-at-home measures continue to keep people online at unprecedented rates, radicalization remains a grave threat. In an effort to provide the most relevant resources about preventing online radicalization, we recently revised our guide to confronting this issue, Building Resilience & Confronting Risk in the COVID-19 Era. Produced in partnership with American University’s Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL), the guide is designed to help caregivers, parents, educators and others who regularly interact with young people recognize and respond to radicalization in the COVID-19 era. On Wednesday, March 3, PERIL and the SPLC invite you to learn more about the nuanced connections between online radicalization, gender, misogyny and male supremacy at our webinar: Gender-Based Violence and Male Supremacy: Crucial Connections to Understanding & Addressing Youth Radicalization Wednesday, March 3 The political turmoil of the 2020 presidential election – marked by false conspiracy theories about a “stolen election” that led to the Jan. 6 insurrection – has accelerated the proliferation of online hate content and recruitment. And because of the COVID-19 pandemic, young people are spending an unprecedented amount of time online. Our webinar series will equip adults with the tools and knowledge to help children navigate online spaces and learn to reject extremist content. During our webinar on March 3, participants will learn about the intersections of race, gender and identity as they pertain to online radicalization. Four panelists will share their insights as survivors, researchers and educators: Sophia Arredondo (she/her) – GLSEN director of education & youth programs Taylor Dumpson (she/her) – third-year public service scholar and Juris Doctor candidate, attained a landmark settlement against neo-Nazis for cyber harassment Mark Greene (he/him) – senior editor at the Good Men Project Ashley Mattheis (she/her) – Ph.D. candidate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a fellow at the Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right, the Global Network on Extremism and Technology, and the Institute for Research on Male Supremacism The Building Resilience & Confronting Risk in the COVID-19 Era guide is available for free here, and we encourage you to share it with anyone who may be supporting young people through this difficult time.
