In a historic move, President Biden has nominated Rep. Deb Haaland to run the Department of the Interior.
- Haaland — whose roots in her home state of New Mexico go back 35 generations — would be the first Native American to serve in a presidential Cabinet.
- But some senators who are in the pocket of the fossil fuel industry are opposing Haaland’s nomination.
- Because Haaland agrees with Biden — not to mention an overwhelming majority of the American people — that climate change is an existential threat and that we must accelerate our shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
- Haaland noted at her confirmation hearing yesterday that this shift “isn’t going to happen overnight” and that fossil fuels “will continue to play a major role in America for years to come.”
- Republican senators are nevertheless whining that the idea of shifting to renewables is “radical.” (That’s the best they can do?)
- What’s radical is confirming an oil and gas lobbyist to be Interior Secretary, as the Senate did under Donald Trump.
- What’s radical is willfully making the world less and less habitable so that fossil fuel companies can keep raking in short-term profits.
Presented with a supremely qualified, knowledgeable, unconflicted, history-making nominee who is committed to the public lands and the planet, there is only one thing for senators to do:
Vote yes.
Send this simple message to the Senate:
Confirm Deb Haaland for Secretary of the Interior.
Add your name.
Thanks for taking action.

P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it. We’re also busy undoing all the damage Trump did. And, like so many nonprofits and small businesses, we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic.
