CLCV Member,

It’s finally here! Today is the official release of the California Environmental Scorecard! With so many bills and legislators impacting our state, it’s not always easy to keep up. That’s why we have done all of the hard work for you. In the Scorecard, we evaluate and grade the Governor, along with every other California state legislator.

Here’s the headline: California gets a C grade in 2020 for climate action. Outside of two important Executive Orders Governor Newsom announced in the fall, last year will be marked by historic climate impacts and dangerous climate inaction by the State Legislature. There is a small group of legislators working tirelessly to protect our future, but they can’t do it alone - a lot more leadership is needed in Sacramento.

What’s new in the 2020 Scorecard? We’ve revamped the Scorecard to include oil money badges to indicate which legislators accepted campaign contributions directly from oil companies or major oil industry Political Action Committees. And we’ve included legislator sign-on letters in the scoring, to hold leaders accountable to the advocacy they are doing in asking for environmental rollbacks.

We have made it as easy as possible to see which legislators are leading to protect California’s future, and which legislators are preventing it.

Once you view your legislator’s score, we encourage you to take a moment to call and let them know what you think about their environmental score and why it matters to you that your legislator always votes for climate action!

Thank you for being an environmental voter,

We believe that transformational change is necessary and only by transforming our political system will we create the opportunity to take bold action on climate change. We elect and cultivate environmental champions, turn election victories into policy wins, hold our lawmakers accountable, and build political power for change. We inspire hope and action and fight for equity and justice for all Californians. We are in the business of changing what’s possible.
