Last week, the Midwest saw some record-breaking temperatures, even as
many residents were left literally out in the cold as their power was
turned off during rolling blackouts!

Lincoln and Omaha hit a record
low, yet some Nebraskans were left without power, as it was diverted on
the power grid to other areas that were also in need.

Basically,
there was not enough energy to go around to everyone who needed it.
Governor Ricketts spoke out about the rolling blackouts, calling them
“completely unacceptable.” He added, “This is the United States of
America. We are not some developing nation who has an unreliable power
grid.”

We need to take a long hard look at whether our state and
entire nation should be relying on more traditional (and reliable!)
sources of power like coal and nuclear plants.

If we’ve learned one
thing during this cold snap, it’s that wind and solar plants can’t cut
it when it comes to emergencies that threaten lives and livelihoods.
