Friend,
Last summer, I made a promise. The killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many others would not be in vain.
So, we held five Justice & Injustice Panels with elected officials, members of law enforcement, and community leaders to discuss what steps we should take to improve the relationship that law enforcement has with the communities we serve.
To that end, I’ve proposed legislation that will help prevent future deaths by heavily restricting the use of no-knock warrants. Breonna Taylor’s killing in Louisville, Kentucky, led me to bring this bill forward. The Nevada Legislature had a hearing on my bill last week, and I’m currently working with stakeholders, including the ACLU of Nevada, District Attorneys, law enforcement, Public Defenders, community organizations, and elected leaders to make this possible.
While Nevada's police have done a good job of restricting themselves on the use of no-knock warrants, their restraint has been the result of their internal policy and not law. My proposed legislation will enshrine best practices and policies into law and ensure that no-knock warrants can only be used in minimal circumstances.
As your Attorney General, I’m committed to making Nevada the safest place for families. Part of that mission is working to continually improve the relationship that law enforcement has with the people they serve.
Sincerely,
Aaron Ford
