Meet our newest State Chairs! Kansas Co-Chair, Sara Hart Weir
Kansas Co-Chair, Sara Hart Weir
Sara Hart Weir is the former President & C.E.O. of the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). Most recently, the 2020 Republican Primary runner-up in Kansas' Third U.S. Congressional district where she was endorsed by Maggie’s List, VIEW PAC and over 15 Republican Members of Congress. Weir's life has been about leading differently, serving others and delivering results with the leadership philosophy of "if you're not at the table, you are on the menu". Sara deploys an “in the trenches” leadership style by engaging directly with constituents - in local communities, in the classroom, on the job site or around kitchen tables. Weir’s passion for “giving a voice to the voiceless” was inspired by Kasey, her best friend of twenty years who had Down syndrome.

Sara quickly realized that the disability community did not have high-powered lobbyists, wealthy corporations or influential political action committees working for them - they relied on the strength of passionate voices outside the political spectrum who were willing to speak up for them. Weir went on to change that, and dedicated her career and service to allow everyone to have a fair shot at the “American Dream” by promoting solutions that give individuals with Down syndrome and all Americans with disabilities access to a better life including serving as the founding member of the C.E.O. Commission for Disability Employment with fellow C.E.O.’s from Voya Financial and Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

Sara’s proudest accomplishment to date is leading the landmark Stephen Beck Jr. Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act in 2014 (P.L.113-295). Weir has been credited by federal and state lawmakers, advocates and key ABLE Act stakeholders for leading the bipartisan advocacy effort behind its 2014 passage. The legislation garnered the support of 85% of the entire US Congress in 2014. Weir also supported the enactment of 49 state ABLE laws and assisted over 40 State Treasurers and 529 Administrators with the launch of their state ABLE Programs since 2015.

Weir has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Political Leadership from Westminster College, a Master of Science in Public Policy and Management from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College and a Certificate of Completion from the Emerging Leaders Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government in Executive Education at Harvard University.

Congressional Partner Spotlight: Sen. Marco Rubio, FL
Sen. Marco Rubio, FL

When Marco Rubio was first elected to the United States Senate in 2010, he set one objective for himself while in office: to help bring the American Dream back into reach of those who feel it is slipping away. That’s the goal line Senator Rubio strives toward with each new legislative effort, and it’s the measure he uses to keep score.

Senator Rubio is passionate about the American Dream because he’s lived it himself. His parents came to America from Cuba in 1956 and earned their way to the middle class by working humble jobs. Through their loving and powerful example, he learned the importance of work and family, and came to realize that all things are possible in America. Now more than three years into his second term, he continues that important work to make the American Dream achievable for all.

Senator Rubio is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, where he has advocated modernizing and reforming the federal government’s programs to help small businesses thrive in the 21st-century economy.

Senator Rubio wakes up every day driven to make a difference, and he is proud to serve the people of Florida in the Senate. He knows the most important work in America today is happening in people’s homes, where parents are raising their children and making sacrifices so they can have greater opportunities than the generation before them. He also understands our laws and government’s policies can make it easier — or harder — for your family to pursue and achieve the American Dream, which is why he’s committed to recentering them on Americans.
