Have you seen what has been happening in Virginia’s General Assembly, friend?

Democrats have been working hard to ensure that 2021 is another year for substantial, long-lasting change in the Commonwealth. Thanks to Democrats, Virginia is about to make history as the first state in the South to pass a number of important progressive changes. Here are just a few examples:

Abolishing the Death Penalty: Earlier this week both chambers of the General Assembly passed bills to abolish the death penalty. Governor Northam has said he will sign the measure and Senator Kaine has recently written an op-ed in support. This is a momentous change, as Virginia becomes the first Southern state to end capital punishment.

Marijuana Legalization: The House of Delegates and Virginia’s Senate both passed bills to legalize marijuana in Virginia. Members of the General Assembly still have to work through differences, but Virginia could soon become the first state in the South to legalize marijuana.

Virginia Voting Rights Act: The Senate and House of Delegates both passed Virginia’s new Voting Rights Act, making Virginia the first state in the South with a comprehensive law protecting people from voter suppression. The bill is on Governor Northam’s desk and is expected to be signed into law.

We are working during this special session to pass legislation that has real, positive impacts on communities all around the Commonwealth. On top of these bills, Virginia Democrats are passing legislation to protect Virginia families and businesses from the pandemic, strengthen our economy, and expand access to affordable health care. You sent Virginia Democrats to Richmond to do good work, and to improve the lives of folks all over the Commonwealth -- they’re delivering.

But progress in Virginia is on the line in November. The GOP could undo all the work Democrats have done in the last two years if we don’t hold our majorities this fall. Will you chip in to help ensure we keep our majority in the House of Delegates and elect Democrats to our statewide offices?
