The 2020 elections were decided by turnout rather than changing the minds of a few swing voters. Biden defeated Trump because 15 million more Democrats voted in 2020 than in 2016. The same is true for the two Georgia senate races. So now Republicans are doubling down on their strategy of voter suppression and election rigging. In 33 states (with more to come), Republicans are trying to enact more than 165 new laws to restrict voting. Instead of voters choosing who governs us, they're determined to flip the system to one where politicians choose who gets to vote.

The only way to counter this attack on electoral democracy is through national legislation such as the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, and the DC Statehood bill. But Senate Republicans are determined to filibuster any and all pro-democracy bills – just as their political ancestors used the filibuster to defend slavery, preserve Jim Crow segregation, deny voting rights to nonwhites, and block economic justice and environmental protection measures. Democrats can use the reconciliation maneuver to get around GOP obstruction and pass COVID-19 and economic relief, but that parliamentary tactic can only be used for budget matters, not legislation to defend democracy. As long as the profoundly undemocratic filibuster stands, American democracy itself is in danger.

Our new Senator Padilla has said he opposes the filibuster. Senator Feinstein, however, isn’t quite so sure. So here’s our Call to Action for you this week:

Call Senator Feinstein ([link removed]) and tell her: Kill the Filibuster to Save Democracy!

Then join us on Sunday, February 28th at 11:00am ([link removed]) for our second-ever virtual Action Hour. At our first Action Hour last week, we made 25 calls to our legislators to use the Congressional Review Act to repeal Trump’s rules and regulations. This time, we’ll contact Senator Feinstein to urge her to kill the filibuster. She’s listening to our constituent pressure—let’s keep it up!

ISF Spotlight: Town hall with Sen. Alex Padilla

In the past few weeks, our friends at Indivisible East Bay welcomed Senator Alex Padilla ([link removed]) with a video ([link removed]) , calls ([link removed]) , and a meeting on February 8 ([link removed]) that included members of Indivisible SF. A coalition of CA Indivisible groups followed that up on February 17 by hosting him in a virtual town hall!

After we submitted questions in advance, Senator Padilla answered our questions and addressed our concerns and priorities. We learned where he stands on COVID-19 relief priorities, the filibuster, healthcare for all, immigration, and more. You can watch the video of the town hall on YouTube ([link removed]) or access it on Google Drive ([link removed]) .
