You may have seen that we launched "100 Days of Action to Save the Boundary Waters" last week -- a multi-week campaign to demonstrate to policymakers the necessity and the overwhelming public support to protect the Boundary Waters from the threat of sulfide-ore copper mining. Thank you if you took action last week!

This week’s theme focuses on the environmental threat sulfide-ore copper mining poses to the Wilderness. This week we ask that you take action by signing our petition asking the Biden-Harris administration to permanently protect the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Voyageurs National Park from sulfide-ore copper mining.

Dozens of scientific analyses have shown that hardrock mining on the Boundary Waters’ doorstep will cause irreparable harm to this irreplaceable Wilderness. A few of the most important scientific findings include:

• The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has deemed metal mining as the United States’ most toxic industry. 
• Pollution from these mines will inevitably flow directly into the heart of the Boundary Waters.
• Because of the Boundary Waters’ interconnected groundwater, wetlands, and abundant lakes and streams, the area is especially vulnerable. 
• Acid mine drainage could wipe out local fish species. Heavy metals and associated pollutants from sulfide-ore copper mines harm microorganisms, aquatic plants, and fish. 
  
  

"The scientific consensus is clear," said Tom Landwehr, Executive Director of the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters, "sulfide-ore copper mining right next to the Boundary Waters poses an unacceptable risk of irreparable damage. The vast majority of Minnesotans and Americans want this iconic Wilderness, and it's exceptional environmental, recreational, and economic benefits protected." 

It’s obvious that sulfide-ore copper mining will cause irreversible environmental damage to the Boundary Waters. Can you take 30 seconds and sign our petition asking the Biden-Harris administration to protect the Boundary Waters?
