Representative Deb Haaland focused on her bipartisan record during the first day of her confirmation hearing to become America's first Native American secretary of the Interior.
“I was the highest-rated freshman in Congress on bipartisan collaboration,” Haaland said. “We can have different views. We can think differently. I feel like the people of New Mexico sent me to Congress to get work done and that’s exactly what I’ve done.”
While Republican members of the committee attacked Haaland for previous statements about stopping drilling on national public land, Haaland stressed that as Interior Secretary, she would implement President Biden’s policy.
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow noted the absurdity of this line of attack, saying “You wouldn't campaign on protecting public lands from new oil and gas drilling and then put somebody in charge of that part of the government who was like ‘Yeah, gung ho, let's drill the bejeezus out of some secret national monuments!’”
Haaland returns for a second day of testimony at 8:00 am Mountain Time today. CWP will again live tweet the hearing.
