In 2009, I made history as the first Black woman elected to the Kansas Senate. Like many candidates, my personal experiences, and my community were key pillars in my decision to run for office. I knew Wichita needed representation from a new voice with a different perspective so I stepped up and put my name on the ballot.

This Black History Month, my mind is on the young Black men and women who are looking to me to be their voice in the Kansas Legislature. Everyday I come to work ready to advocate for my community and this session I introduced a bill to amend the Kansas Act Against Discrimination by adding “protective hairstyles” to a list of covered terms. Today I am asking you to join me, the Kansas Black Caucus, and the Kansas Democratic Party as we fight to end racial discrimination in the state of Kansas by rushing a donation of $35, $50, or $100.
