We need environmental justice. Black and brown communities are on the front lines of our climate crisis. And climate change is making once-in-a-century extreme weather events -- like the winter storm in Texas -- more and more frequent.

In Texas this week, these communities were among the first to be hit with power outages -- after already being disproportionately impacted by the health risks and economic hardships of the pandemic.

We launched a Texas Relief Effort to direct donations to groups in Texas that are providing direct support in their communities. Will you consider making a donation to support these three organizations?

Feeding Texas: The largest hunger-relief organization in Texas -- with a network of 21 member food banks -- is helping Texans impacted by the disruption of the food supply chain caused by the weather and power outages.

Austin Area Urban League: The AAUL currently has an emergency donation drive to help provide shelter, food, clothing, and water to people experiencing housing insecurity in Austin.

Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services: T.E.J.A.S. is currently supporting environmental justice efforts through their mutual aid fund for fenceline communities in Houston.

These organizations all have missions dedicated to closing the equity gap. They are all currently providing direct relief in response to this disaster. Any support you can send them will go a long way as Texas recovers.

We believe in the power of mutual aid -- especially in times like this -- because it is grassroots organizing in action. But crowdfunded support isn't a replacement for good governance. Nor does it address systemic inequity.

Texans deserve elected officials who will fight for environmental justice and put the safety of their constituents over the profits of dirty energy and utility industries. We hope that our work to end gerrymandering will help make that possible.
