L.A. City Council Approves Motion to Ban Rodeo Torture Devices
Dear Friends,
Last Chance for Animals (LCA) applauds the Los Angeles City Council for voting in favor of a Motion brought forward to ban the use of inhumane implements used by the rodeo industry.
Today, February 23, 2021, L.A. City Council voted in favor of a Motion brought forward by Council Member Bob Blumenfield (District 3) and seconded by Council Member Mitch O’Farrell (District 13), banning the following inhumane implements at rodeos and rodeo events: electric prods or shocking devices, flank or bucking straps, wire tiedowns, and sharpened or fixed spurs or rowels. These torture devices are essential to force animals to perform in rodeos.
The Motion requests the City Attorney to prepare and present the Ordinance. LCA will keep you updated on the movement of this important ban.
The L.A. Motion was modeled after a similar ordinance adopted in Pittsburgh, which prohibits inciting animals to perform with similar tools. While this is not an outright rodeo ban, it is a huge step in the right direction. Rodeo events will not be able to take place without the tools they use to control and torture the animals.
LCA would like to thank supporters who sent emails, wrote letters, and made phone calls in favor of this precedent-setting Motion. But the work is not done! Please continue to put pressure on your L.A. City Council Member. Email, Call, Write that you support the Rodeo Inhumane Implements Ban! Learn more here.
1. Keep up the pressure! Call, email, or write your local Council Member letting them know you support Council File 20-1575, to ban the use of inhumane devices in rodeos.
2. Sign LCA's change.org petition supporting a total rodeo ban in Los Angeles and share on social media.
