This month marks 11 years since the Supreme Courts’ decision in Citizens United vs. FEC, which fundamentally changed the way our political system works.

The ruling allows corporations and dark money groups to spend unlimited amounts of money influencing our elections. It determined that corporations are people, and in some cases, it gives corporations more power than the American people.

Grassroots support is the power behind our democracy -- and campaigns like mine. But the Citizens United decision creates a barrier for diverse candidates from different racial and socio-economic backgrounds to run for office, putting them up against millions of dollars from outside interests and super PACs. They, and our voters, deserve an electoral system that works for them.

Citizens United puts corporations, not people, in the driver’s seat of policy. This has to stop.

Working-class Americans are underrepresented in positions of power, and eliminating Citizens United would make the playing field fair for all candidates who want to represent their communities -- not just whoever has the most support from super PACs and interest groups.

We need more diversity in politics, and getting rid of Citizens United lowers the enormous threshold of financial burden that comes with running for office.
