[[link removed]?]Yesterday, the Virginia General Assembly passed common-sense legislation to prohibit individuals from bringing firearms onto the grounds of the state capitol and into government buildings. I’m a proud Virginian, John. That’s why I personally fought for this bill alongside so many of Brady’s grassroots supporters to urge lawmakers to take action in our state. Now, the bill is on the way to Gov. Ralph Northam’s desk to be signed into law, saving lives in our state.
This bill is essential to the safety of all Virginians and for our democratic processes – and we need other states to follow suit.
John, it is critical that other states take immediate action to ban guns in government spaces. We witnessed armed extremist violence in Washington, D.C., on January 6. Afterward, the FBI reported that all 50 state capitols faced threats of more armed attacks. In fact, over the past year, there have been armed protests at state capitols across the country, including in Oregon, Michigan, Virginia, and more. Our democratic institutions and American lives are on the line — and that’s why Virginia took action. It’s also why we desperately need every single state to ban guns in government buildings and protect our democracy.

And we are reminded of how many lives were spared because Washington, D.C., bans open carrying of firearms in public spaces: The bloodshed at the U.S. Capitol could have been far worse without these laws. Guns do not belong in our democratic process, plain and simple. And state lawmakers have the power to prevent further tragedy and protect our democracy — we saw it happen in Virginia.
