Today, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence and the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence are releasing the
first major analysis of the most recent U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) firearm mortality data showing the breadth and depth of America’s gun violence epidemic.
For the third consecutive year, guns killed nearly 40,000 Americans, more than the number of Americans who die in car crashes. One in 10 gun deaths were children and teens.
The data reveals disproportionate rates of gun death among Black Americans and Americans of color, the highest rates of gun death occurring in rural counties, and the fact that the vast majority of gun deaths -- 60% -- are firearm suicides.
We also break down the data state-by-state.
The newly released 2019 CDC data represents the most reliable gun violence data currently available in the U.S. In our report, we call on elected officials to provide better, faster data that doesn’t take a year to become public.
We need swift action from elected officials at the federal, state and local levels to pass gun violence prevention laws that save lives.
This report will be a valuable tool for the entire gun violence prevention movement. At CSGV and EFSGV, we will use it to continue our advocacy for a public health approach to gun violence prevention, applied with an equity lens, that includes strong new laws, funding across all levels of government, and executive action from the new presidential administration.
