John, Virginia legislators voted earlier this month to abolish the death penalty. A direct descendant of the racist terror lynching, the use of capital punishment
disproportionately affects Black Americans and other people of color. Banning the death penalty is a historic step towards the reform of Virginia’s broken criminal justice system, and is a testament to the power of Black voices and adequate representation.
When Black voices are heard, progress gets made.
Leaders in Virginia have worked hard to end the death penalty, but now we need Governor Ralph Northam to sign the bill into law!
Virginia could be the first Southern state to abolish the death penalty, but in order to move forward, we need him to do his part.
