John,

Black History Month gives us a chance to reflect on the movements that changed our country for the better and shows us the progress we can still make.

Black leaders are the backbone of our society. Leaders like Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and John Lewis fought for equality during the Civil Rights movement which led us to activists like Patrisse Cullors, LaTosha Brown, and Stacey Abrams whose efforts to organize Black voters became especially important after the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

This month we also remember historic events that happened right here in Kansas. More than 60 years ago, the Supreme Court handed down a landmark decision after hearing the historic Brown vs. Board of Education case. This was a monumental case in our country’s fight against segregation -- and it happened right here in Topeka.

While Brown v. Board of Education didn't end racial discrimination in our country, it ignited a call for change in our education system and is still important to this day.

Over the summer we saw the Black Lives Matter movement come together in a way that ignited a new call for change. We saw protests against police brutality, economic injustice, and racism. We began to have important conversations with our friends, family, and neighbors about the America we want to see. We saw Americans join together to call for a more equal home for all.

Every Kansan deserves the same opportunities as their neighbor. I have been and will always be committed to honoring those who have fought to make the future brighter for their family.

During this Black History Month, I want all of us to make a commitment. A commitment to honor the legacies of those who fought for their rights during the Civil Rights movement. A commitment to learn how we can continue their fight today by listening and lifting up Black voices. And a commitment to making a more equal and just country for all.

Thank you for your support,

Laura Kelly
