Donald Trump is no longer in office, but American democracy is still running dangerously low on oxygen.
Decades of lies pushed by right-wing media have created a massive segment of the population that is easily convinced that global warming is a hoax, that COVID-19 is not a threat, and that a fair-and-square election was stolen.
The fight for the survival of our democracy is a battle against these toxic lies.
Common Dreams was founded nearly 25 years ago with the mission to inform, inspire, and ignite change for the common good. We built a nonprofit, ad-free, reader-supported news outlet run by progressives, funded by progressives, and operated in the name of progressive values.
But further progress toward our shared goals of a better, more equitable, and peaceful world is now threatened by lies and misinformation spread by Fox News, OAN, Breitbart, and Sinclair, and countless far-right conspiracy theorists on social media who have hijacked an entire political party and are cutting off the oxygen our democracy needs to stay alive.
