"I saw compassion and kindness -- among each other, and among the volunteers working in the hospital. It heightened the desire in me to see all of America striving for a more connected, respectful society."
- Mary Sebert, RN, MPH
Project HOPE Volunteer

============================

Dear Friend,

It's hard to believe it's been almost a year since COVID-19 changed our lives. Our frontline workers and first responders have been tasked with doing the impossible, and despite the toll it's taken on them, they continue to bring health and hope to us all.

Project HOPE volunteers like Mary embody both the hard work and optimism we know will help us make 2021 a healthier, happier year. When the Navajo Nation faced a second overwhelming surge of COVID-19 cases in December, Project HOPE sent volunteers like Mary to help care for people and relieve already overburdened health workers.

Mary knew that to provide the best care possible she would need to understand and respect the culture of the Navajo Nation community in Chinle. Many patients, particularly elders, felt most comfortable speaking their native Navajo, so the hospital and volunteers like Mary worked with translators and consulted with traditional healers from the community.

Reflecting on her time, the Navajo Nation left an impression on Mary beyond caring for patients:

"To protect each other, tribal members willingly sacrifice personal needs for the greater good, demonstrating community-mindedness... providing water to homes that lack running water, delivering food to those who lack transport to grocery stores..."

There are teams of committed, compassionate people like Mary saving lives from COVID-19 and other health crises around the world -- and Project HOPE is more focused than ever on making sure we have the resources to make the seemingly impossible happen.

When you become a HOPE Partner today, your monthly gift will ensure that disaster responders, medical volunteers and urgently needed aid can go wherever it's needed as quickly as possible. And when you join before February 25, an additional $100 will be added to your first monthly gift.
