John,

Voting is a fundamental American right. It’s what gives folks like us a voice in government, keeps our democracy accountable, and ensures that those in office are working for the people who put them there.

But voting hasn’t always been recognized as the right it is. Civil Rights activists fought for years to pass the Voting Rights Act, to ensure that every eligible American has easy access to the ballot box. And while that law did pass, we’ve seen countless and continuing attempts by Republicans to tear it apart.

We know that voting restrictions — from voter roll purges and strict ID laws, to curtailing mail-in ballots and all the other stealthy and creative loopholes Republicans come up with — disproportionately impact communities of color.

That’s why I was proud to vote YES on the Virginia Voting Rights Act, which will prevent local governments from putting burdensome restrictions on voting. Will you sign your name to join me in supporting the Virginia Voting Rights Act?

Our communities deserve a say in the leaders and policies that represent us. And we’re not asking nicely — we’re taking back what’s rightfully ours.

In solidarity,
