This Black History Month, we celebrated the generations of Black Americans who overcame centuries of injustice to build a better future for all.

From the WWII Marinship workers, to iconic artists, musicians and activists, Black Americans have made invaluable contributions to our District and our Nation.

But we as a Nation must also recognize the inequities that Black Americans continue to face every day. From health, housing and income disparities, to our criminal justice system and our environmental policies, systemic racism can be found in virtually every aspect of our society — and we must do much more to address it.

If we mean what we say about equality and racial equity, then it’s not enough to just celebrate the contributions of our Black heroes during Black History Month. We must honor them by recommitting ourselves to building a more fair and just nation, and doing everything we can to finally make that happen.
